Music is not a commodity

23 Mar

We like music with a groove. Music that takes unexpected, unpredictable turns but still feels familiar somehow. Music that gets in your head and stays there.

We’re Mind Balm Records, a brand new independent record label in St. Petersburg, Florida, specializing in blues, roots and Americana. But we’re not as interested in labeling things as we are in finding music we love and sharing it with the world.

Click around and take a look at what we’re doing. If you like what you see, let us know – a little encouragement goes a long way with us.

Don’t label. Just listen.

Memphis Train Union is Soundcheck’s Artist of the Day

10 Feb

Jay Cridlin at the TBT’s Soundcheck blog has named Memphis Train Union the Artist of the Day … which is, of course, perfect timing since tomorrow is the big CD release party at the Dunedin Brewery.

Come on out and see what all the fuss is over. I personally guarantee* you’ll have a great time.

*Not a guarantee.

“The Bluebird Sessions” CD Release Party This Saturday Night

7 Feb

Starts 9 PM on Saturday, Feb. 11 @ The Dunedin Brewery

In stores now!

3 Feb

Well, threats were made, tears were shed, and people were sacked, but in the end it was all worth it. And that’s because “The Bluebird Sessions” is finally on store shelves. Hooray!

If you’re in the Tampa Bay area, you can pick up a copy at any of these fine retailers:

Microgroove (Tampa)
Mojo Books & Music (Tampa)
Daddy Kool (St. Petersburg)
Sound Exchange (Pinellas Park)

Not a local? Not a problem. Try these places too:

Criminal Records (Atlanta, GA)
Harvest Records (Asheville, NC)
Antone’s Record Shop (Austin, TX)

We’ll be adding to this list over the next few weeks, so check back regularly.

Well, we *think* it’s a good review, at least …

1 Feb

Tough to tell for sure though, since no one in the Mind Balm compound reads Dutch, and Google’s Translate function is a bit on the hit-or-miss side.

That’s two reviews in as many days that compare MTU to the J. Geils Band, which is fine with me – I’ve always thought their early albums are underappreciated gems.

This just in … MTU is kicking ass on Amazon

31 Jan

Almost forgot – as of right now, The Bluebird Sessions is near the top of Amazon’s list of bestselling new roots rock albums!

Nice, huh?

They update this list hourly, it seems, so if you see it hit #1 please take a screen shot and let us know.

All that and a bag of chips

Check out this great review of The Bluebird Sessions in Asheville, NC’s Bold Life magazine.

Franc Robert at the 2012 IBC

29 Jan

As you read this, Mind Balm artist Franc Robert is en route to Memphis, Tennessee for the 2012 International Blues Challenge, which kicks off on Tuesday. If you’ve never been, and you can get yourself there, you owe it to yourself. It’s a week-long celebration of blues music, with a competition that draws the best bluesmen (and -women) from all over the world … including, this year, Franc.

If you can’t be there, wish him luck as he represents Mind Balm and the Tampa Bay area this week. If you can be there, then do that instead. Or both. We’re not stingy.

Oooooh, we’ve been mentioned on the telly …

27 Jan

And by “we,” I mean Memphis Train Union. Cafe Racer, a pretty cool custom motorcycle show on Discovery’s Velocity channel, has used some snippets of MTU’s first CD for their Season 3 episodes. No word yet on whether any tuneage from The Bluebird Sessions will show up, but we’re optimistic.

Congrats, Dave!

Some early mentions

25 Jan

“The Bluebird Sessions” was apparently noticed by a site called MusicTunes4You – why not surf on over there and cast a five-star vote like I just did?

And it also merited a quick mention in Creative Loafing’s New Music Tuesday post. Hopefully Leilani will have time to let us know what she thinks of the CD in the near future.

We’re so excited, we could just plotz

24 Jan

Memphis Train Union’s “The Bluebird Sessions” is out today!

We certainly hope you’ll love it as much as we do. You can check it out for yourself, of course – just go here to stream the entire CD. We’re pretty sure you’ll want your own copy.
